Why You Need Clean Skincare in Your Beauty Routine
Did you know that the average person uses 9 different cosmetic items on a daily basis? By the time you add up toothpaste, mouthwash, face wash, deodorant, moisturizer, aftershave, lip balm, ointment, and face cream it's easy to see how it can all add up. That number might seem high to some of you, and low if you're a beauty junkie like me. What's even more surprising is that this behaviour actually exposes our bodies to over 168 different chemicals a day. Our skin is like a sponge - you will notice that most products get absorbed into your skin after a certain amount of time. Where did they go? The answer is: into your bloodstream. And not all of those products are completely innocent, either.
Toxic chemicals like parabens, BHT, BPA, oxybenzone, triclosan, synthetic fragrances, and siloxanes are all ingredients that can be found in the most common household cosmetic products. These ingredients have hormone-distupting behaviours when exposed to the body for long periods of time. Many of them have chemical properties that mimic our body's natural hormone production, causing your body to act as if there was a hormonal imbalance. Long term effects can include irregular periods, weight gain, cystic acne, infertility, and even cancer.
At the moment, there are about 500 harmful chemicals banned for cosmetic use in Canada. This is a great start but nowhere near the 1300 banned in the European Union. That is why it is always important to scan the labels of your cosmetic products before you buy them. I would strongly recommend opting for certified Clean and Organic brands, which have to undergo strict regulation testing in order to hold that designation.
